I may be able to say a word or two about the older Sony Vaio F-Series laptops.

They can suffer from sudden shutdown syndrome.   Installers absolutely
need to put in two boot parameters.   One turns off the HLT CPU
instruction ("no-hlt") and I can't recall the other one.   WIthout the
two, the laptop shuts down as soon as it starts loading the kernel.
