installfest?  would putting in a squid cache help with updates?  I've
been running a local squid cache on my local machine with the hope
that I would be able to export it in the future.  never have had a
chance to try it.

it does require some tweaking of your config files to point at the
given squid proxy, and users will have to undo that change when they
leave.  Unless someone has a better idea.
